Fairview Health Services Karen Interpreter in Maplewood, Minnesota
The Interpreter is responsible for the oral interpretation and written translation of communication between Karen speaking patient/family members and medical staff. Serves as a cultural bridge between a minority culture, foreign-based belief system and experiences, and western-trained medical personnel. Enhances the outreach of services to a minority population.
Maintains knowledge of, and complies with, all relevant laws, regulations and policies, procedures and standards
Actively participates in creating and implementing improvements to achieve clinical, satisfaction and/or efficiency outcomes
Interprets between patients/family members, providers, nurses and staff
Assists with written translation of Karen as needed
Provides consultation to medical providers as needed
Acts as a cultural liaison between non-English speaking patients and providers
Promotes inclusiveness and diversity
Follows Interpreter codes of ethics and HealthEast policies, department guidelines and procedures
Assesses safety of the work area/site and takes initiatives to prevent accidents, according to prescribed HealthEast policy
Represents HealthEast at community activities
Promotes HealthEast to community providers
Identifies HealthEast growth opportunities
Maintains productivity records on services provided
Maintains record of departmental requests for services provided to evaluate scope of service needed within the organization
Examines every interaction for the opportunity to assure customers are satisfied with services
Exhibits excellent customer relations with clients, coworkers, referral sources, and others so that HealthEast is known for service excellence
Identifies instances in which cultural differences between parties have potential to seriously impair communication, and shares cultural information with both parties that may be relevant
Assists speaker in developing an explanation that is understood by the listener
Assists with development of education for staff around appropriate interpreter usage
High school graduate or equivalent
Native or near native fluency in Karen
Formal college level course or equivalent in medical interpreting and Associate degree/Bachelor's degree preferred
Training minimum 40 hours - in medical interpreting with Bridging the Gap, University of Minnesota or Century College preferred
1 year experience in medical interpreting
Health care experience preferred
Knowledge of medical setting and basic medical terminology
Computer Skills Basic: Ability to use a computer and applications that are associated with performing basic work tasks (use a mouse, navigate in Windows, Outlook, etc)
Crisis Intervention: Ability to identify, assess, understand, and cope with a serious situation, especially from the moment it first occurs to the point that recovery procedures start
Foreign Language Fluency: Ability to smoothly and quickly read text aloud and/or converse orally with others in a foreign language or ASL
Interpersonal Communication: Skilled in developing effective rapport with customers, co-workers, or families, actively listening to develop a positive connection
Medical Staff Relations: Builds effective partnerships with medical staff, physicians, fostering open lines of communication and establishing trust
Medical Terminology/Spelling: Familiar with medical terminology and medical spelling
Multi-Cultural Communication: Ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures
Cultural competence comprises four components: (a) Awareness of one's own cultural worldview, (b)
Attitude towards cultural differences, (c) Knowledge of different cultural practices and worldviews, and (d) cross-cultural skills
