Fairview Health Services Lactation Consultant RN - Woodwinds Hospital in Maplewood, Minnesota

Overview

Assesses and meets specific needs of breastfeeding women, both inpatient and outpatient and works with maternity care team and clinical staff as a resource.

Responsibilities

• Maintains knowledge of, and complies with, all relevant laws, regulations and policies, procedures and standards

• Actively participates in creating and implementing improvements to achieve clinical, satisfaction and/or efficiency outcomes

• Provides one on one consultation, develops and implements education for patients /families in the HealthEast Outpatient Lactation Clinic

• Provides follow up for patients who have discussed lactation concerns with staff nurses and need additional consultation with a lactation consultant

• Acts as a visible lactation resource to promote lactation services, breastfeeding education and breast pump sales

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing required

  • International BC Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certified from the International Board of Lactation Consultants required

  • Valid MN RN license from the MN Board of Nursing

  • 2 to 3 years experience working with breastfeeding mothers

  • Prefer 2 to 3 years experience planning and implementing patient and staff education

  • Ability to plan and implement breastfeeding education for patients and staff

  • Assessment, Planning, Evaluation: Collects and analyses pertinent data and/or clinical findings

  • Incorporates clinical findings and scientific evidence in the development, coordination and implementation of an individualized plan of care to achieve desired outcomes

  • Evaluates progress towards goals and outcomes identifying opportunities for improvement and change

  • Computer Skills Basic: Ability to use a computer and applications that are associated with performing basic work tasks (use a mouse, navigate in Windows, Outlook, etc)

  • Counseling: Ability to provide counseling on an individual and group basis to achieve individual service plan goals

  • Ability to resolve issues

  • Ability to use interpersonal skills and methods to reduce or eliminate conflict

  • Evidence Based Practice: Evaluates and/or assists in the evaluation of practice in relation to existing evidence identifying opportunities for the generation and use of research

  • Interpersonal Communication: Skilled in developing effective rapport with customers, co-workers, or families, actively listening to develop a positive connection

  • Multi-Cultural Communication: Ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures

  • Cultural competence comprises four components: (a) Awareness of one's own cultural worldview, (b)

  • Attitude towards cultural differences, (c) Knowledge of different cultural practices and worldviews, and (d) cross-cultural skills

  • Nursing Process: Utilizes the nursing process to provide holistic, compassionate, safe, high quality, population based care

  • Patient Safety: Demonstrates practices that support safety with recognition of variations in populations served, preventing harm to patients, families, employees, and themselves

  • Professional Practice: Demonstrates behavior consistent with the standards, scope of practice, ethics, and characteristics of a licensed professional
