  • Consisting of RNs and Nursing Station Technicians.

  • Float Pool RNs- Inpatient hospital experience is highly preferred, but extended orientation may be offered to RNs without experience. The adult float pool RNs consist of two groups- medical/surgical RNs and specialty care RNs. The medical/surgical RNs float to the following units: inpatient medical, orthopedics, acute rehabilitation unit, transitional care unit, and may also float to the newborn family care center.

  • The specialty care RNs are able to float to the medical/surgical units as well as the adult emergency department. Specialty care RNs function in the role of flyer in which they work as an adult hospital resource, serving any adult nursing need that arises on UMMC West Bank. The Adult Flyer is also ACLS certified and is able to offer assistance in critical situations.

Responsibilities/Job Description

  • Provides care to critically ill adult patients with complex medical conditions which require close observation, monitoring and interventions.

  • Safely employs (sets-up, utilizes and trouble shoots) the following monitoring devices;

  • Arterial lines

  • Cardiac Monitoring

  • Invasive and non-invasive hemodynamic monitoring

  • Care for patient undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures/interventions on the unit.

  • Unit Specific Equipment:

  • Mechanical Ventilators

  • Defibrillator

  • Cardiac Monitors

  • Internal and External pacemakers

  • Doppler

  • Provide care to patients that seek medical care who have been triaged at a appropriate level for Float Pool. Some unique patient populations include, sexual assault survivors, psychiatric, trauma, solid organ and blood and marrow transplant, substance abuse.

  • Safely employs (sets-up, utilizes and trouble shoots) the following monitoring devices;

  • Arterial lines

  • Cardiac Monitoring

  • EKGs

  • EtCO2

  • Doppler

  • Provides care to adult orthopedic patients with complex medical conditions which require close observation, monitoring and interventions.

  • Safely employs (sets-up, utilizes and trouble shoots) the following monitoring devices including but not limited to:

  • CPM

  • Traction

  • Cryocuffs

  • Braces

Qualifications

Required:

  • BLS for healthcare providers.

  • MN RN licensure.  

  • Must have completed 300-320 hours as a paid summer nurse intern at Fairview Health Services OR must have at least on year of current experience in an Adult Float Pool  

Preferred:

  • BSN or higher degree in nursing strongly preferred.

  • 1-2 years inpatient hospital experience.

  • ACLS.

  • Certification in specialty.

  • ED or behavioral experience
