Eligible candidates will be Masters prepared social workers licensed as an LICSW (or working towards LICSW) who possess a high level of independent clinical practice along with experience in program development, education and leadership. Successful candidates should be skilled in crisis intervention, problem-solving, short-term therapy, experienced with acute/chronic illness, and enjoy team work.

The BMT social worker collaborates with two other LICSW social workers to provide psychosocial support to a very diverse population of pediatric patients (ages 0-26 years) and their families undergoing the BMT treatment process. BMT patients receive both inpatient and outpatient care as part of their treatment. BMT treatment is risky and intense as patients may experience a range of treatment related complications, from minor to very severe. Hospitalization is expected to span several weeks and recovery and monitoring typically occurs for an additional two to three months. BMT patients may live locally but most travel from other states or countries in order to receive treatment for life-threatening illnesses including cancers, genetic and other rare diseases.

Social work services provided include: assessment of psychosocial functioning & capacities; counseling for care planning and decision-making; navigating community resources; helping to facilitate coping; and providing counseling for adjustment to illness, grief, loss & bereavement.

Successful candidates have demonstrated the ability to work collaboratively with members of interdisciplinary teams from many hospital departments and community organizations in the accomplishment of these duties. The BMT social worker should be flexible, adapting to rapidly changing conditions, and have strong communication, problem-solving and leadership skills.
