The vascular access technician (VAT) is qualified to place and remove peripheral IV lines, obtain blood specimen with initial IV start, access and de-access port a catheter, discontinue PICC lines under the direction of the registered nurse and verification of physician order. The VAT will evaluate vascular access devices (VAD) for complications, report to registered nurse and initiate resolution as directed by RN according to established protocols. The VAT will collaborate with patient care units and other departments to promote and maintain customer satisfaction and positive patient outcomes. The VAT will also collect data to assure positive quality outcomes and performance improvement. The VAT may administer topical, intra-dermal, and IV medications for the purpose of placing, evaluating and maintaining VAD. The VAT may not administer any medications for the purpose of resolving a VAD complication.
To be successful, the Vascular Access Tech must be able to:
Obtain vascular access under the delegation of an RN
Evaluate vascular access sites and initiate care per guidelines and protocols under the direction of an RN.
Graduate of an accredited LPN, CMA or EMT program or an Associates Degree in Clinical lab Science.
Current EMT, LPN, CMA or Clinical Lab Tech licensure in the state of MN
Must be certified in NCA, ASCP, AMT, or BLS.
Must be able to obtain vascular access under the delegation of an RN
Must be able to evaluate vascular access sites and initiate care per guidelines and protocols under the direction of an RN.
Two years of experience placing peripheral lines.
